The Long County Board of Education met twice in the month of March to complete the monthly agenda.
One of the major issues finalized was the approving of the 2007-2008 school calendar. The first day of the next school year will be Aug. 6 and the last day will be May 23, 2008.
The only major change to the calendar from this school year will be adding a student/teacher holiday period from Feb. 18-22. This time has also been designated as a period for remediation and enrichment for any student who requests additional help in preparing for the CRCT Test and the Georgia High School Graduation Test.
The board also approved a majority of the employee positions for the 2007-08 school year to include teachers for all grades and specialties, the school psychologist, guidance counselor, coaches and instructional coordinators.
The board also accepted a bid from Waters Mechanical, Inc. to provide all labor and materials for installing air conditioners in the gymnasium at Walker Middle School. The gym currently only has heaters, and the work will be done over the summer break.
Superintendent Dr. Edwin Pope informed the board there was to be a GSBA summer conference and delegation assembly in Savannah on June 22-23. The board approved Chairman Dempsey Golden to attend the conference on behalf of the school system.
It was also approved to continue funding a portion of the costs for county extension personnel with the University of Georgia Board of Regents and the Georgia Cooperative Extension Agency. This would allow the 4-H program to continue in the school system, and assist in the funding of the county extension office.
The board also decided to have a safety inspector review and approve the different schools’ safety plans, and also gave initial approval for a 30-day review to implement a heat-index policy to help ensure the safety of students who participate in athletics.
Pope also presented a plaque and gift basket to all members of the board to recognize their work in honor of School Board Appreciation Week.
