Long County roadways are much tidier after the local 4-H Club took part in a spring clean-up effort while also participating in a district-level competition recently.
First, the club had 10 members attend the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton for the Southeast District Project Achievement Competition Feb. 9-11.
Jason Makay, Bethany Houston, Sara Harris, Mary Alexander, Stephen Menges, Katherina Devera, Errin McGinn, Jessica Shanken, Christopher Bryant and Austin Overby participated in the event.
Bethany Houston won an excellence award for her project in fashion and Mary Alexander won an excellence award for her history project.
The chaperones for the event were Long County agent Robbie Jones and program assistant Lisa Overby.
“I’m so proud of all the kids. Thirty-nine counties participated in this and our kids did a great job, all of them. These project achievements take a lot of preparation and work, and everyone did a good job,” Overby said.
There were 648 members statewide who competed in the competition. The Long County 4-H Club also received a third place award for the highest percentage increase among participating counties.
On Feb. 27, the club took part in a clean-up project on Highway 57.
Participants were Amber DeLoach, Bethany Houston, Amanda Mayfield, Elideth Tepate, Becky Houston, Cierra Lee, Ninotshika Cruiz, Keiauna Savea, Kaitlynn Walker, Tori Cooper, Megan Alexander, Sean Sphar, Margaret Alexander, and Lily Huerd. Also helping were Kristen Mitchell, Naomi Savea, Marissa Wallace, Karina Nevarez, Emily Adams, Mary Alexander, Alex Henly, Iman Miles and Brittany Sterner.
The members cleaned up a one-mile stretch on the highway filling 12 bags of trash.
“What a great turnout and what a great job these kids did,” Overby said. “The kids want everyone to remember that April is Keep Georgia Beautiful Month, and the 4-Her’s will continue to do their part.”
