Teen drowns in apartment pool

POSTED: September 18, 2008 5:01 a.m.
A Savannah teen drowned Saturday afternoon while swimming in a Hinesville pool with his brother.
According to Hinesville Police Department Det. Nollie Bentley, Juakeem Banks, 16, drowned in a pool in Woodwind North apartment complex on Olmstead Drive. At 4:50 p.m. a call reporting a drowning was placed to Liberty 911.
Bentley said, “Juakeem Banks and his 14-year-old brother were playing in the pool, having a good time when Juakeem Banks ended up in the deep end of the pool where the water was eight feet high.”
Juakeem Banks’ aunt, Mignon Banks noticed her nephew sink to the bottom of the pool and, while holding a child in her arms, summoned the 14-year-old to go after his brother. The youngster made several attempts to reach his brother but was unable to. A resident in the apartment complex came out to see what was wrong and immediately grabbed a pole used to clean the pool and lowed the 14-year-old into the water to grab his brother and bring him to the surface.
CPR was performed to revive the teen and he was taken to Liberty Regional Medical center in Hinesville where they were able to get his heart beating. Bentley said he was later flown by LifeStar to Memorial Health University Medical Center and placed on life support.
The teen was removed from life support on Sunday afternoon and was pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m.
