Grey skies couldn’t dampen the smiles on the faces of teachers and students starting the 2017-2018 school year in Liberty County Friday.
Liberty County School System students returned to school where they were greeted with smiles from school staff and community leaders. It was particularly special at the Pre-K Center for students going to school for the very first time, starting a long career in academics.
Parents lined up outside the doors, holding the hand of their small children wearing colorful backpacks of superheroes and cartoon characters.
An emotional Sheresa Walker walked her daughter Yamari Smith to class.
“I know that’s what she needs. I just want to know that she’s safe and in good hands,” Walker said.
Pre-K Center Director Greg McCallar was excited about the first day.
“This is their first experience going to school. They have smiles on their faces and we’re looking forward to working with them,” he said.
The center had a great turnout for open house Thursday, McCallar said.
“We’re getting these impressionable young children and we’re the first ones they meet,” McCallar said. “We’ll be getting them ready for kindergarten and teaching them the fundamentals.”
