Liberty County High School junior point guard Metra Walthour exploded for 33 points to help lead the Lady Panthers to a 63-54 win over McIntosh County Academy on Saturday night.
The Panthers (16-4, 5-1 Region 3-AAA [A]) avenged their early season 52-49 loss at MCA (17-2, 8-0 Region 2-AA).
“I knew going into the game that our kids would perform well,” LCHS coach Carolyn Kelly said. “They were real disappointed at the first loss to McIntosh and the kids were talking about how McIntosh is ranked No. 1 in WTOC’s poll and how they beat us once, so they played hard from beginning to end.”
Nisha Adams prevented the Lady Buccaneers from developing an inside game, blocking 14 shots.
Kelly changed defensive strategies. Rather than going with the full court press, she had her squad go into an aggressive half-court defense.
Kelly also said she was glad her team had the opportunity to play a team as well coached and talented as the Lady Buccaneers because it will help them in their sub-region re-match with Hephzibah on Friday.
MCA like Hephzibah runs a half-court trap on defense. The Lady Panthers could not penetrate Hephzibah’s trap in the first game and lost 62-49. Now, after penetrating MCA’s similar defense, Kelly is confident that her team will break the trap when they travel to Hephzibah this Friday.
“We are preparing hard for them,” she said. “We know we have to go out and play four quarters of basketball. Hopefully, we will loosen up the middle and Metra (Walthour) and Nisha (Adams) will attack the half court defense.”
Friday’s game will more than likely determine the sub-region champion. Hephzibah is 6-0 and is a game ahead of the Liberty County in the standings with four games remaining. With no other teams in the sub-region making a run for the title, a win by Hephzibah will give them the championship and the No. 1 seed in the region tournament. Meanwhile, if Liberty County wins the remainder of their games then they will split the subregion title with Hephzibah and a tiebreaker will be used to determine the No. 1 seed.
Liberty County’s game with Richmond Hill on Tuesday was not complete in time.
