Not only is he spreading the good news, his wife and children also proclaim the word. The multi-talented McIver Family preaches as well as sings.
A native of Liberty County, Pastor (Prophet) Otis McIver loves to tell people the good news of Jesus Christ. He wants to see people come to Christ.
“I have been in the ministry for 36 years,” McIver said.
His wife Rebecca and three of his children are also in the ministry. McIver said he loves to read and study God’s Word.
“I have learned a lot by studying the word and reading various books. We must study and mediate on the word,” he said.
McIver is the pastor and founder of Church of God Uplifting in Midway. He has served as a pastor for 26 years.
“I also had a radio ministry for many years. I was on 13 different stations in Georgia and South Carolina. We were able to reach many people through the radio ministry, and I received a lot of encouragement from the radio audience.”
While his church is small, it is involved in feeding the hungry. It donates to different organizations that feed the hungry at home and abroad.
“I love to help people, and our plan is to purchase land and build new churches here and in South Carolina. I am training the people and sending them out. My sons have preached in various places,” he said.
The pastor says he loves working with the youths. “When I was a member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, I would pick up the youths and bring them to Sunday School. I was faithful on the deacons and ushers’ boards. I love to do things with the youths. We take them out to dinner,” McIver said.
McIver cautions ministers to be straight with people. “Preach the word like it is written. A lot of false things are being told. You must tell the truth whether people accept it or not. We are God’s ambassadors, and we must tell God’s Word the way it is written...It is the truth that will set people free.”
Instead of relaxing and enjoying retirement, McIver is working with the Liberty County Pre-K Program as a custodian. He retired from Union Camp/International Paper after 35 years of service. In his spare time, McIver enjoys baseball and softball. “I played football while in high school.”
Both McIver and his wife are graduates of the old Liberty County High School.
The McIvers have been married for 40 years and have seven children and 11 grandchildren. One daughter is in the Air Force in Japan, and one son is stationed at Fort Stewart. “He is preparing to return to Iraq for the third time,” McIver said.
Rebecca McIver is the housekeeping supervisor at Coastal Manor in Ludowici. “My wife evangelizes at the nursing home and loves to encourage young people.”
Pastor McIver and the McIver Family Singers are getting ready for their 30th anniversary celebration. This singing family has ministered all over the community and in surrounding communities. The celebration will be at the Powerhouse of Deliverance Church in Hinesville on March 31 at 5 p.m.
