Shrimp season closes off state

POSTED: January 31, 2018 12:44 p.m.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources announced last week that shrimping off the coast of Georgia has been closed.

“No person may trawl for brown, pink or white shrimp in federal waters off Georgia,” effective last Wednesday,” a DNR release said.
State waters were closed the week before because of low water temperatures in the area for a prolonged period, DNR said.

The closures are to protect white shrimp during their spawning season. The DNR said it had requested the closure of federal waters to protect the area’s shrimp population.

NOAA Fisheries will issue a new Fishery Bulletin announcing the re-opening to shrimp harvest in federal waters off Georgia.
Full regulations can be found in the Federal Register.
