Mary Dowd, who worked for the city of Hinesville for 35 years, retired last month.
The city court administrator’s last official day was Jan. 12.
“I am looking forward to relaxing and just taking some time for myself,” she said. “I would like to travel and do some things that I have not been able to do while I have been working.”
Dowd, widow of the late Thomas Cribbs, who was a major with the Hinesville Police Department, came to work for the city on May 16, 1983. She served in various roles to include records clerk, deputy court clerk and crossing guard.
“My time with the city of Hinesville dates back before 1983,” Dowd said. “When my husband came to work for the city, they had no records system, so I used to volunteer my time helping to establish a records system for the court citations.”
From the beginning, Dowd has been a team player, coworkers said.
In 1987, she was one of the organizers of the Liberty Association of Women and served as the vice president. The organization formed to improve conditions of the city and county by supporting all law enforcement agencies and to contribute to unexpected emergencies.
Her peers selected her as employee of the year in 1996, 1997 and 2002. In 2006, Dowd helped organize the Georgia Municipal Court Clerks Council. She served as a board member, vice president and later president in 2008-09. In 2014-15, she attended Leadership Liberty through the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce.
Dowd has sat on several interview panels for various city positions and has served on various committees, including the Mayors’ Motorcade Committee which raises money for patients of mental health institutions in Georgia.
“Mary has been an exceptional employee and friend,” Mayor Allen Brown said. “We are certainly going to miss her dedication and team, can-do attitude and team spirit.”
