Child dies, arrest possible soon

POSTED: October 30, 2008 5:00 a.m.
A seven-month-old prematurely born girl died two weeks ago as a result of injuries, the Hinesville Police Department reported. According to HPD Det. Doug Snider, autopsy reports concluded the infant’s death was caused by head trauma probably from abuse.
The detective’s unit took over the case after receiving word from the Department of Family and Children Services on Sept. 28, that the girl had been taken to Memorial Health University Hospital in Savannah showing signs of injuries that appeared suspicious in nature.
According to the incident report, the child was tested but showed no signs of brain function.
Following hospital prodedure, officials placed the baby on a respirator and tested her again after 24 hours. At 10:15 a.m. Sept. 29, a second test  showed no signs of brain function.
The detective’s report says the mother was notified and arrangements were made for organ donation before the baby was removed from life support.
Detectives interviewed family members and Snider said the unit has been on the case since its inception.
Snider said a suspect has been identified and an arrest is forthcoming.
Calls to verify the hospital’s policy were not returned by press time.
