Celestine “Cela” Barrett, a third-grade teacher at Jordye Bacon Elementary School in Hinesville, was recently named local teacher of the year by the Hinesville Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club/Distribution Center.
The award is given as part of Wal-Mart’s 12th annual teacher of the year program.
Barrett received a $1,000 grant for Jordye Bacon Elementary and a $100 gift card to buy supplies for her classroom, a teacher of the year polo shirt and a certificate.
Wal-Mart associates, family and friends were present to support Barrett.
Teachers were nominated by members of the community during February and selected by a committee of store and club associates.
Hinesville store manager Warren Wohlgemuth said, “The selection process was not an easy one because the teachers nominated in this area were all superb. It is with great pleasure that the Hinesville store recognize Ms. Barrett along with the more than 4,000 teachers nationwide who are being honored by Wal-Mart’s teacher of the year program. This is great news for our community.”
Wohlgemuth said Wal-Mart and its foundation are committed to a philosophy of giving back locally, supporting the causes that are important to customers and associates. Last year, more than $270 million was given to local communities in the United States.
Since the Wal-Mart teacher of the year program began in 1995, Wal-Mart has honored more than 25,000 teachers nationwide and donated more than $18.5 million to local schools.
