Food Lion stores have partnered with Maxim Health Systems to make flu shots available to customers this fall. The program aims to increase the number of people who get vaccinated, a step determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the single most effective way to prevent flu.
Each year, as many as 65 million Americans fall victim to influenza and flu-related complications, such as pneumonia, resulting in 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths. Everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated, especially those considered to be at higher risk. The CDC defines those with an increased risk of developing influenza-related complications as:
• Children aged 6 months until their fifth birthday
• Pregnant women
• People 50  and older
• People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions
• People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
• People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu
"Obtaining a flu vaccination is an important part of reducing your risk of getting sick from the flu, and we especially encourage those in high-risk categories to get vaccinated," said John Bednarz, director of pharmacy for Food Lion LLC. "By offering this service in our Food Lion stores, we provide a convenient location for our customers to get vaccinated."
Visit or call your local Food Lion to obtain dates and times for the flu clinics. Clinics will be held at individual Food Lion stores through Nov. 22.
