Nearly 70 percent of Liberty Countians vote

POSTED: November 20, 2008 5:00 a.m.

More than 68 percent  of the 23,847 active registered voters in Liberty County cast ballots Tuesday and in the weeks leading up to it, using a combination of early voting, advanced, absentee and regular voting.

As the Liberty County elections office continues to tally and double check the votes Wednesday, Ella Golden, supervisor of elections, said the Election Day process was nearly perfect.

“It went so well,” she said. “I have absolutely nothing to complain about.”

One of the main reasons Golden thinks the voting process went so well was because of voters who took advantage of early and advanced voting.

“It made a big difference because when I opened up the second location in Midway, in two and half days we had 831 people,” she said.

Golden said this number, coupled with the close to 8,000 other early voters at the Commerce Street office, meant there were that many less people standing in line on Election Day.

Most of the precincts reported that they experienced a much greater volume of voters than in previous presidential election years and that the heaviest foot traffic occurred first thing in the morning.

Golden said all results are unofficial until Friday.
