A Riceboro family is still trying to recover from a home fire that occurred March 18 while they were on vacation.
The Riceboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, assisted by the Midway firefighters, were called to 224 Oak Creek Rd. at about 8:50 a.m. after a neighbor, Darryl Woodard, saw smoke billowing from the roof.
Woodard was credited for immediately calling 911, and turning off an external propane tank that enabled the firefighters to quickly extinguish the blaze.
While en-route to the scene, Riceboro’s assistant chief E. McGinley asked that Walthourville Fire Department be toned out for additional manpower as well as Eastern District’s water tender.
According to the incident commander, Capt. Dennis Fitzgerald of Riceboro, the fire was contained to the kitchen.
Although that area was severely damaged, other rooms in the house incurred smoke damage, the homeowners said they plan to repair the house.
The Liberty County Chapter of the American Red Cross provided assistance to the family.
