Miss Christmas Holiday crowned

The 2008 Miss Christmas Holiday Beauty Pageant took place Dec. 6 in Ludowici. The event was held at Long County High School. Debbie Gaitten was the emcee for the night, and the judges were Lisa Wells and Deborah Winn-Smith.

Long Co. schools to close early Friday

Students in the Long County School System will get to start Christmas break a few hours early.According to Superintendent Robert Waters, the system's three schools will end classes by noon Friday."As a result of the schools all making AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress), we are rewarding the students, the faculty and the staff by letting them start their holiday a little early," Waters said.

Waters said students at Walker Middle School and Long County High School will be let out at noon, while Smiley Elementary School students will be released at 11:45 a.m.

Three injured in Long County wreck

McGowan begins throwing again

This past season was a bittersweet one for major league pitcher Dustin McGowan of Long County. The right-hander began the year entrenched in the Toronto Blue Jays' rotation, but in July he re-injured his right shoulder, ending his season.

Arrests made in Long Co. burglaries

Three Hinesville men linked to four recent burglaries in Long County were arrested last Wednesday. According to Nicky Anderson, a detective with the Long County Sheriff's Department, the men were arrested and charged with burglary by forcible entry to a residence. The men charged are Anthony Antonio Andrews, 20, Tiontae LeCounte, 18, and Corey Jarell Felton, 17. The men were charged with breaking into apartments on Wilkerson Road in Long County - Whispering Oaks Duplex Apartments and Heritage Apartments.
