Seventeen people responded to the Liberty County Emergency Management Agency's offer for a basic weather spotter class, and another 21 people attended the advanced class Nov. 5 at the agency's headquarters in downtown Hinesville.
During its November meeting, the Long County Commission received a report from Georgia Forestry Commission Long/Liberty County Chief Ranger David Duke, who predicted that 2011 will end up being the second-worst year on record for acres burned. In Long County, 115 fires cropped up and more than 7,000 acres were destroyed.
Nov. 1: Police charged one man with possession of marijuana and another with driving under the influence after stopping a vehicle at Brantley Drive and West Oglethorpe Highway for an inoperative brake light. During the stop, a K-9 officer registered a positive hit on the vehicle, and a rear passenger was arrested after attempting to swallow marijuana. The driver failed field sobriety tests conducted on the scene and was arrested for DUI.
Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes officially welcomed a new bonding agency to Liberty County. Sikes congratulated owner Ernie Walthour and commended him for going through the certification process. Sikes said Walthour's company offers the public options that once were limited.

A hitchhiker was killed Wednesday morning in Riceboro as he was sleeping on a dirt road near Montague Street, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Oct. 27: A resident of Handy Street told police she paid a house-moving company $4,000 to relocate a home for her but the work was never done and she could not locate the subject whom she signed a contract with. Police found that previous complaints had been filed against the same company and were unable to make contact with the company's operators.
A wreck involving a Liberty County school bus and several vehicles occurred Tuesday morning before 8 a.m. on Highway 84 in Midway. Eight students were taken to the hospital via emergency medical services for evaluation, according to Liberty County School System Superintendent Dr. Judy Scherer. Other students may have been taken by parents to the hospital to be checked out.
