The body of a drowning victim was recovered from a Liberty County borrow pit Thursday evening on Wells Cemetery Road near Gum Branch.

Possible drowning off Wells Cemetery Rd.

A 29-year-old man may have drowned Thursday afternoon in a pond off Wells Cemetery Road near Gum Branch. At press time, Liberty County first responders were searching the pond for the man's body, and a diving team was en route from Jesup. According to Liberty County Sheriff's Office Detective Brian Barnes, the man reportedly had been swimming with a friend around 4 p.m. when he went under the water and did not resurface. The friend then went to get help. Liberty EMA, the sheriff's office and area fire departments were assisting at the scene.

March 16: Simple battery - A Freedman Grove Road woman told deputies her neighbor grabbed and hit her after their children fought. The woman said her minor daughter was playing outside with the neighbor's minor son. The children argued, and the boy got hurt. The woman told deputies the neighbor came to her house, yelling and cursing for her to come outside.
