A 29-year-old man may have drowned Thursday afternoon in a pond off Wells Cemetery Road near Gum Branch. According to Liberty County Sheriff's Office Detective Brian Barnes, the man reportedly had been swimming with a friend around 4 p.m. when he went under the water and did not resurface. The friend then went to get help. Liberty EMA, the sheriff's office and area fire departments were assisting at the scene.
March 16: Simple battery - A Freedman Grove Road woman told deputies her neighbor grabbed and hit her after their children fought. The woman said her minor daughter was playing outside with the neighbor's minor son. The children argued, and the boy got hurt. The woman told deputies the neighbor came to her house, yelling and cursing for her to come outside.

A tractor-trailer driver and his wife, who are from Augusta, escaped unharmed when their truck caught fire Tuesday morning on Highway 196 in Long County's Sand Hill community, near the Time Saver convenience store.
