Terry Bernard named to pardons board

ATLANTA - Gov. Sonny Perdue has appointed two members to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles, clearing the way for executions and clemency hearings to continue.

Perdue appointed Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice Commissioner Albert Murray and Republican state Rep. Terry Barnard to the five-member clemency panel. He is also recommending that current pardons board member Garland Hunt take Murray's former job.

Friday wreck kills Fleming man

A Fleming man was killed in a vehicle accident that occurred at about 5 p.m. Friday on Highway 17 at mile marker 14, according to a report filed by the Georgia State Patrol. The report said Walter "Herman Phillips Jr., 53, died. There will be more about the accident in Wednesday's Coastal Courier.

'Good police work' nabs escapees here

Two escapees from a Harris County jail were caught in Liberty County Monday. According to Liberty County Sheriff Chief Deputy Keith Moran, deputies were led to the duo after a series of events landed the reported escape artists in county limits, trying to cash in allegedly stolen lottery tickets. An elderly Liberty County man was found dead in his home Friday on the 700 block of Isle of Wight Road after firefighters extinguished a structure fire that broke out just before 2 p.m., according to county fire coordinator James Ashdown.
