Jail expansion in works, county funds architecture

In January, a Liberty County Grand Jury committee found the Liberty County jail to be "well maintained and spotlessly clean," according to a legal notice run in the Feb. 9 issue of the Coastal Courier. However, the committee also expressed concern over the facility's ability to accommodate an increasing inmate population. The grand jurors recommended county officials and the Liberty County Sheriff's Office stay committed to expanding the jail in the near future.

Fire leaves area family homeless

A Wednesday fire in Gum Branch left a family of three homeless. The fire broke out shortly after 3:30 p.m. at 103 Dolly Jane Drive, according to Gum Branch Volunteer Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Charles Helton. John Barnard and his two teenage sons live at the residence but were not home at the time of the fire.

Georgia Forestry Commission, Ogeechee District ranger David Duke said the No. 1 cause of wildfires in Liberty County is residents unintentionally allowing their yard-debris burns to get out of hand. Duke said weather conditions have been dry lately, even with a few recent light rains, and therefore homeowners should take extra care when burning residential yard debris.
