Communities rally around firefighters, volunteers

The massive wildfire that broke out last week in a wooded area near Elim Church Road left part of Long County in ruins; however, it appears to have strengthened the bond between area residents and neighboring communities.

Firefighters douse hot spots

The fire that broke out in Long County on Thursday afternoon ravaged 4,035 acres and burned 10 structures, three of which were occupied homes, said Darrell Ballance, Ludowici/Long County Fire Department Chief and Emergency Management Agency Director. The cause of the blaze still is unknown, but the Georgia Forestry Commission will conduct a full investigation.

Long County fire 95 percent contained

A massive wildfire that engulfed parts of Long County on Thursday and closed Highway 84 is 95 percent contained within firebreaks, according to Long County Emergency Management Agency Director Darrell Ballance and Ludowici/Long County Fire Department Assistant Chief Richard Truman. The officials estimate that more than 1,000 acres have burned, but could not say exactly how much land had been destroyed. Firefighters are still putting out hot spots and two helicopters are doing water drops, Truman said, although he did not know how long the water drops would continue.

Long County Schools closed due to fire

Long County schools are closed Friday because of the massive wildfire that began Thursday afternoon near Elim Church Road and has now burned more than 1,000 acres. The blaze quickly spread to the wooded areas surrounding Highway 84 and officials closed the road in both directions. Long County High Schools is being used to house evacuees.

Young burn victim home

Caleb Hamacher, 6, seriously was burned Feb. 11 when a small backyard fire at a home in the 900 block of Primrose Lane in Hinesville flared up after gasoline was used to get it going. Now, a month and a half after the child was taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta and listed in critical condition, Caleb is back home with his family.
