Nursing home fire just causes scare

MACE, LCSD seize drugs, pistol, vehicles

The Multi Agency Drug Task Force and the Liberty County Sheriff's Department seized more than 30 pounds of marijuana, 7.6 grams of cocaine, a stolen 9mm handgun and three vehicles this past week in an increasing effort to reduce the amount of drugs and crime in the community, according to authorities.

Wrecks keep emergency responders busy

Two unrelated wrecks kept Hinesville traffic accident investigators and Liberty EMS busy Aug. 29. Just before noon, a male driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle as he attempted to make a turn from Highway 84 onto Courtland Drive. According to lead traffic investigator Les Patton, the driver attempted the turn while traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control, sending the Nissan into the median on Courtland Road. Troopers prepare for busy holiday weekend

Georgia state troopers and officers with the Georgia Department of Public Safety's Motor Carrier Compliance and Capitol Police divisions are preparing for a busy 78-hour Labor Day holiday travel period. Heavy traffic is expected throughout the weekend across the state as holiday vacation travel combines with holiday festivals and the start of the high school and college football seasons.

Dog used for search, rescue

Leonard Turner and his canine partner, Chase, attend the Midway Volunteer Fire Department open house Tuesday. Chase is part of the Eastern District's search and rescue team and was involved in the search for a lost person in the Magnolia Manor area and a missing girl search in Pooler. He can track and search by air scent. Chase is training to be a cadaver dog. Doug Salsberg from the Richmond Hill Police Department is helping the pair with their training. At home, Chase is just another member of the family, Turner said.

Downed power line starts fire in Ludowici

Smiley Elementary School was briefly evacuated around 2 p.m. Tuesday when stormy conditions caused a tree to fall on a power line outside the school. The downed line started a small fire in the woods and caused a surge inside the school, which knocked out power and caused the fire alarm to go off, according to Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters.
