St. Simons manhunt ends

ST. SIMONS ISLAND - Authorities say an inmate who walked away from a work crew has been recaptured on St. Simons Island.

March 16: At 10:40 p.m., Hinesville Police Department officers were dispatched to Liberty Regional Medical Center to speak with Fort Stewart Department of Defense Police authorities, who reported a soldier accidentally shot himself in the finger. The incident reportedly happened while he was attempting to clear a weapon. The bullet struck his left ring finger. According to the incident report, it was a Glock .38 caliber weapon. The soldier was treated at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

Missing woman found in R.H.

The Florida woman who sparked a wide police search Monday when she dropped off a pickup at a stranger's home and then walked way was found around noon today in a motorhome in the same subdivision, police said.

Murder suspect agrees to plea

In a surprising turn of events, what was expected to be a weeklong trial ended abruptly when murder suspect Jason Howard suddenly accepted a deal in exchange for pleading guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the 2004 deaths of his mother and stepfather, Mildred and Jewel Cleveland, in their Gum Branch home.

Jan. 25: A Hinesville resident told police someone stole more than $18,000 worth of home furnishings, military gear and personal items from his locked storage unit. The man told police he believed a woman he met at a local restaurant who helped him retrieve some items from the unit earlier may have taken one of the storage unit keys and the electronic access code from him. The woman was captured on the storage facility's security cameras entering the facility just after the man's access code was entered.

March 2: Police responded to an affray at a park on East Oglethorpe Highway after one patrol officer heard several shots fired in the vicinity. Two subjects were detained on the scene but one was released after witnesses verified his lack of involvement. A third subject, later identified as the shooter, fled the scene but later was apprehended. The weapon was recovered and previously was reported stolen. The shooter faces charges of theft by receiving stolen property, discharging a firearm near a public street and carrying a weapon without a license.
