Sunbury rape trial begins

The jury was selected and testimony began Tuesday in Liberty County Superior Court in the trial of a man accused of raping a Sunbury woman. The case, which has been likened to a crime novel, was once described as the trial of the century by attorneys. This trial and others that may follow promise several twists and turns.

Soldier hit, killed by vehicles

RICHMOND HILL -- Robert John Nowlin Jr., 22, a soldier stationed at Fort Stewart, died Monday morning from injuries sustained after being struck by multiple vehicles on Highway 17, near Cartertown Road, according to a representative with the Georgia State Patrol.

Preliminary reports indicate Nowlin and his wife got into an argument. Nowlin got out of their vehicle and started walking north on the highwya. While crossing the highway, he was reportedly struck by one vehicle and run over by a second vehicle.

Downed power line starts fire in Ludowici

Smiley Elementary School was briefly evacuated around 2 p.m. Tuesday when stormy conditions caused a tree to fall on a power line outside the school. The downed line started a small fire in the woods and caused a surge inside the school, which knocked out power and caused the fire alarm to go off, according to Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters.
