Long County burglary suspect apprehended

The Long County Sheriff's Office captured burglary suspect Brandon Izzard, 23, on Wednesday. He had been on the loose since being released from Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah four weeks ago.

Long County fire 95 percent contained

A massive wildfire that engulfed parts of Long County on Thursday and closed Highway 84 is 95 percent contained within firebreaks, according to Long County Emergency Management Agency Director Darrell Ballance and Ludowici/Long County Fire Department Assistant Chief Richard Truman. The officials estimate that more than 1,000 acres have burned, but could not say exactly how much land had been destroyed. Firefighters are still putting out hot spots and two helicopters are doing water drops, Truman said, although he did not know how long the water drops would continue.

Long County Schools closed due to fire

Long County schools are closed Friday because of the massive wildfire that began Thursday afternoon near Elim Church Road and has now burned more than 1,000 acres. The blaze quickly spread to the wooded areas surrounding Highway 84 and officials closed the road in both directions. Long County High Schools is being used to house evacuees.

Young burn victim home

Caleb Hamacher, 6, seriously was burned Feb. 11 when a small backyard fire at a home in the 900 block of Primrose Lane in Hinesville flared up after gasoline was used to get it going. Now, a month and a half after the child was taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta and listed in critical condition, Caleb is back home with his family.

March 7: An ATM customer in Hinesville recovered and returned $500 to a previous customer who had driven off without the money. The customer who discovered the money called police, who later witnessed the money's owner return to retrieve her funds.

Jail expansion in works, county funds architecture

In January, a Liberty County Grand Jury committee found the Liberty County jail to be "well maintained and spotlessly clean," according to a legal notice run in the Feb. 9 issue of the Coastal Courier. However, the committee also expressed concern over the facility's ability to accommodate an increasing inmate population. The grand jurors recommended county officials and the Liberty County Sheriff's Office stay committed to expanding the jail in the near future.
