According to Multi Agency Crack Enforcement Drug Task Force Commander Al Cato, tips received by individuals in the community are routinely checked out by agents. Cato said he encourages members of the community to call if they suspect drug or other illegal activities are taking place in their neighborhoods. Four of the incidents in this report came from vigilant community members.

Long County Sheriff's Department gets funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. -Congressional funding for improvements to the Long County Sheriff's Department has been approved by the House in the 2008 Omnibus Appropriations bill. The funding of $330,886, secured by Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., will be used to acquire equipment, hire personnel and fund a community education program.

Abusers may be grouped

On March 1, 2004, Dominique Jovone Dowling was charged with one count of aggravated child molestation, one count of child molestation, one count of aggravated sodomy and three counts of child molestation for allegedly performing acts on a female under the age of 16 who lives in Hinesville. He spent time in Liberty County jail waiting for his bond hearing and underwent a mental evaluation, after which he was described as mildly mentally retarded, but competent enough to understand the difference between right and wrong and to stand trial.

Downed power line starts fire in Ludowici

Smiley Elementary School was briefly evacuated around 2 p.m. Tuesday when stormy conditions caused a tree to fall on a power line outside the school. The downed line started a small fire in the woods and caused a surge inside the school, which knocked out power and caused the fire alarm to go off, according to Superintendent Dr. Robert Waters.
