Auto bailout talks intensify

WASHINGTON -- Tense talks are continuing on a bill to provide financial aid to the auto industry as the White House pushes tougher consequences than congressional Democrats embrace for failure by the carmakers to bring costs under control.

The Bush administration would allow a "car czar" envisioned in the legislation to force the companies into bankruptcy if they weren't doing enough to cut labor costs, restructure their debt and downsize to stay afloat.

Hinesville jobless rate climbs to 7.2%

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor reported today that the unemployment rate in metro Hinesville rose to a preliminary unadjusted rate of 7.2 percent in October, up 2.2 percentage points over the year from October of 2007. The jobless rate in metro Hinesville rose six-tenths of one percentage point from a revised 6.6 percent in September.

Consumer confidence up a little in November

NEW YORK -- Consumer confidence rose in November amid receding gas prices, but Americans' views on the economy remain the gloomiest in decades as they grapple with massive layoffs, slumping home prices and dwindling retirement funds.

The New York-based Conference Board said Tuesday its Consumer Confidence Index now stands at 44.9, up from a revised 38.8 in October. Last month's reading was the lowest since the research group started tracking the index in 1967.

Imperial resumes refining sugar at plant

PORT WENTWORTH - Imperial Sugar's coastal Georgia plant is operating again for the first time since a February explosion killed 14 people and injured dozens more.

Company CEO John Sheptor said Wednesday the refinery in Port Wentworth resumed producing liquid sugar earlier this month and on Thursday will receive its first shipment of raw sugar since the explosion nearly 10 months ago.

JCB cutting jobs at Pooler plant

POOLER - JCB Inc., manufacturer of construction equipment, says it will lay off 120 employees at its Pooler plant near Savannah.

The company said Thursday the layoffs represent about a quarter of its Pooler work force and that the cuts will take place on Friday.
