State jobless rate at 10.5 in February

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor says the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to a record 10.5 percent in February.

The rate is up one-tenth of a percentage point from the 10.4 percent reported in January. The February jobless rate was up 1.8 percentage points from 8.7 percent at this same time last year.

Trestle to Brunswick port being repaired

BRUNSWICK - Georgia Ports Authority officials say fire damage to a railroad trestle connecting to a shipping terminal in Glynn County is not as extensive as had been feared.

The trestle to the Colonels Island facility caught fire Monday. Authority spokesman Robert Morris says two rail cars carrying new Alabama-built Mercedes-Benz automobiles to the terminal burned, destroying all 16 autos.

Georgia Power bills going up in April

ATLANTA - Georgia Power customers will see their bills go up again.

The Georgia Public Service Commission voted 4-1 on Thursday to let the utility raise prices starting April 1. The average residential customer will pay $9.91 more a month from June through September and $3.44 the other eight months of the year.

The rate tops the previous record of 10.3 percent set in December. It's also up 2 percentage points from the 8.4 percent at this same time last year.

Courier changing news stand price

Effective March 3, the Coastal Courier is changing the newsstand price for weekday editions to 75 cents. The price of the Sunday paper will remain at 75 cents. Subscription or home delivery rates also will not change. The Courier last increased its weekday edition prices 14 years ago in January 1996 from 25 cents to 50 cents.

Kroger helping build cabin at 4-H camp

ATLANTA - Now through March 13, Kroger customers can buy a $1 or $5 paper icon at any Kroger cash register to benefit the "Rock Eagle 4-H Center Cabin Campaign." The statewide effort, which includes all 176 Kroger stores in Georgia, is designed to raise $100,000 to fund construction of the "Kroger Cabin," the first corporate-sponsored cabin on the Rock Eagle 4-H Center campus in Eatonton. During the past two years, Kroger has raised more than $171,000 toward the project, but $250,000 is needed to finish the cabin.
