State plans hearing on nuclear plant costs

ATLANTA - Utility regulators are planning hearings on the cost of adding two nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle in eastern Georgia.

The state's Public Service Commission will hear testimony next week on how much money Georgia Power has spent on what is expected to be a $14 billion project. The Southern Co. subsidiary says the project remains on schedule and under budget.

Bumper peach crop expected

FORT VALLEY (AP) - The harvesting, packaging and selling of Georgia's peaches has begun, and growers are cautiously looking for a bumper crop this year.

Imperial, OSHA in settlement talks

SAVANNAH - Imperial Sugar and the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration are discussing a possible settlement of proposed fines against the company for a deadly 2008 refinery explosion near Savannah.

The talks have prompted an administrative law judge to postpone a hearing on the fines by the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission scheduled for next Tuesday in Savannah.

$800,000 to help prepare for new foundry

Local phone company, Qwest to merge

MONROE, La., and DENVER - CenturyLink and Qwest Communications announced recently that their boards of directors have approved an agreement under which CenturyLink will acquire Qwest in a tax-free, stock-for-stock transaction. Under the terms of the agreement, Qwest shareholders will receive 0.1664 CenturyLink shares for each share of Qwest common stock they own at closing. Upon closing of the transaction, CenturyLink shareholders are expected to own approximately 50.5 percent and Qwest shareholders are expected to own approximately 49.5 percent of the combined company.
