Hinesville jobless rate hit 8.2 percent in May

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Hinesville rose to 8.2 percent in May, up three-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 7.9 percent in April. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed workers in the metro area increased to 2,679, up 83 from 2,596 in April.

State jobless rate dips in May

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 10.2 percent in May, down one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 10.3 percent in April. However, the jobless rate remains seven-tenths of a percentage point higher than the 9.5 percent at this same time last year. This is the 32nd consecutive month Georgia has exceeded the national unemployment rate, which is now 9.7 percent.

NeSmith gives $1,500 to youth baseball

Nesmith Chevrolet executive manager Mike Reed of Hinesville presented $500 donations May 20 to each of the youth baseball programs on Fort Stewart and the Liberty County Recreation Department. This is the second year the dealership has participated in the Chevy Youth Baseball Initiative, a national program that runs every March through July.

Jekyll Island revitalization moves forward

JEKYLL ISLAND - The Jekyll Island Authority announced recently that three companies have been selected to join the Jekyll Island beach village project. They will build two new hotels and new retail space for the island. Following a request for proposal process, the board of directors approved the recommendations made by the Jekyll Island Authority evaluation committee, and project development agreements will be finalized with each company.

Workshops for laid-off educators starting

ATLANTA - State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said the Georgia Department of Labor will begin a series of workshops this week to help thousands of laid-off Georgia education employees transition into new careers. The first workshops are today and Saturday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Albany, Atlanta Airport Marriott, Atlanta Marriott Century Center, Macon State College and the Marietta campus of Chattahoochee Technical College. All workshops will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
