Local phone company, Qwest to merge

MONROE, La., and DENVER - CenturyLink and Qwest Communications announced recently that their boards of directors have approved an agreement under which CenturyLink will acquire Qwest in a tax-free, stock-for-stock transaction. Under the terms of the agreement, Qwest shareholders will receive 0.1664 CenturyLink shares for each share of Qwest common stock they own at closing. Upon closing of the transaction, CenturyLink shareholders are expected to own approximately 50.5 percent and Qwest shareholders are expected to own approximately 49.5 percent of the combined company.

Hville-Stewart home prices decrease

In Hinesville-Fort Stewart, home prices, including distressed sales, declined by 12.36 percent in February 2010 compared with February 2009, according to First American CoreLogic, a financial services company that specializes in surety and title insurance. Excluding foreclosures and other distressed transactions, the year-over-year house price index for February was down 8.01 percent, compared to January, when prices were down 6.12 percent.

Comcast workers spruce up LeConte

As part of Comcast Cares Day, nearly 40 volunteers gathered Saturday at LeConte-Woodmanston Plantation to work on flower beds, mulch the garden and lay bricks on a walkway designed to honor those once enslaved on Liberty County plantations. The memorial, "The Walk: An African-American Tribute," will cover 50,000 square feet and bear the names of about 6,000 former slaves when it is complete.

Hinesville jobless rate dips in March

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Hinesville declined to 8.5 percent in March, down three-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 8.8 percent in February. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed workers in the area decreased to 2,791, down 74 from 2,865 in February.
