Special Olympics held on Stewart

The Special Olympics held their opening ceremony April 27 on Fort Stewart starting with their parade of athletes. According to Debbie Tomkiewicz, adaptive physical education teacher and local coordinator of the Liberty County Special Olympics, athletes from Fort Stewart, Liberty and Long County participated in track, wheelchair races and throwing events. "Our event would not have been successful without the help of Mavis Crowell, who works at ACS on Ft. Stewart and Larry Laughlin, who works with their youth sports program," Tomkiewicz said.

Scott’s All-Stars donate time

Scott's All-Stars earned some community service hours volunteering their time at last week's Small World Festival. The young men worked from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. setting up tables, picking up litter and helping out local vendors at the event. The boys also were able to enjoy the entertainment and observe the different cultures that reside in Liberty County.

Blue Tide finishing summer conditioning

The Long County High School football team's summer conditioning program is winding down. The Blue Tide began their program in June and have been practicing three days a week ever since, with the exception of taking off last week. They will wrap up their conditioning July 17, and their football camp will run July 21-25. School practice begins July 28.

The Bradwell Institute Tigers resumed team practices this week after taking one week off as required by the Georgia High School Association. The players trained with their helmets on, allowing them to become acclimated to the heat.

Swimming is more than treading water

Tom Dunlap started swimming at age 10 and still asserts - 70 years later - that the sport is good for the body and mind. His friend, Gary Burch, started swimming about two years ago and said it has improved his overall health. Both men regularly take to the pool at the Liberty County YMCA, and while they do it to stay in shape and have fun, they want others to know that the recreational activity can be deadly for those who don't know how to swim. "Most of the kids who drown probably thought they could swim," Dunlap said.
