Lady Tigers aim for state playoffs

The Tiger tennis team is serving up a trip to the Region 3-AAAAA playoffs. According to Tiger tennis coach Janet Reddick, the boys didn't field a complete team but still did well for the season. As for her Lady Tigers, they went 11-2 overall and 11-2 in the region for the season.

FPCA captured the Class AA-Region 4 title Friday, defeating perennial powerhouse Frederica Academy, 3-2, at the St. James Sports Complex.

Blue Tide just short against No. 1 team in state

The Long County High School baseball team took on Appling County on Friday in Ludowici. The Pirates came into the game undefeated at 19-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state, according to the GaPrep.com/GACA poll. In addition to battling one of only two undefeated high school baseball squads in Georgia, the Blue Tide also faced Major League Baseball top prospect Byron Buxton. Although the Tide was the obvious underdog in the game, Long County gave Appling a run for its money. It took the Pirates a full seven innings to beat the Tide, 4-3.

Glynn defeats Panthers on home turf

A seventh inning three-run surge from Glynn Academy allowed the Red Terrors to leap past Liberty, 8-3, in a Region 2A-AAAA contest Friday night on the Panther's home turf.

Spartans edge out FPCA, 3-0

First Presbyterian Christian Academy didn't win Thursday, but they did play defense well enough to hold last year's Class AA champions to only three runs. The FPCA boys lost, 3-0, in a home game against Edmund Burke.

10U Merchants undefeated in Savannah

The Long County 10U Merchants played in the 2012 Savannah Spring Swing wheel-pitch tournament March 30-April 1. The Merchants were placed in the gold bracket and went undefeated in the tournament. Blue Tide finishing summer conditioning

The Long County High School football team's summer conditioning program is winding down. The Blue Tide began their program in June and have been practicing three days a week ever since, with the exception of taking off last week. They will wrap up their conditioning July 17, and their football camp will run July 21-25. School practice begins July 28.

Swimming is more than treading water

Tom Dunlap started swimming at age 10 and still asserts - 70 years later - that the sport is good for the body and mind. His friend, Gary Burch, started swimming about two years ago and said it has improved his overall health. Both men regularly take to the pool at the Liberty County YMCA, and while they do it to stay in shape and have fun, they want others to know that the recreational activity can be deadly for those who don't know how to swim. "Most of the kids who drown probably thought they could swim," Dunlap said.
