The Long County High School softball team, playing at home, defeated Liberty County on Thursday in a lopsided 16-2 game.
During the summer, many girls from the area play alongside each other on recreational and traveling softball teams. On Saturday morning, however, the friends became temporary foes as the Lady Panthers of Liberty visited Bradwell's Lady Tigers in a match hotter than the soaring temperatures.
Liberty County High School was thrust into Region 2A-AAAA last year and the football team suddenly faced a whole new set of Region opponents.

As the basketball season starts up, there are several local high-school graduates to keep an eye on at the collegiate level.
Former Liberty County High School football player Shadrach Thornton had to sit out the first game of the season for the North Carolina State Wolfpack due to off-the-field legal trouble.
