Higgason, Standard continue soccer careers

Good friends and former First Presbyterian Christian Academy Highlander soccer teammates Kelsey Higgason and Brooke Standard on Friday penned their names to soccer scholarships to play for Armstrong Atlantic State University. The girls signed during separate ceremonies at their respective high schools.

BI boys, girls sweep Groves

Bradwell Institute honored its senior basketball players Friday night, just before the Tiger teams took to the court and swept the Groves Rebels. The Lady Tigers won, 54-19, while the BI boys soared in the second half to pull away for a 61-54 victory.

Tide boys, girls lose to McIntosh Co.

The McIntosh County basketball teams on Thursday traveled to Ludowici, where they beat both Blue Tide squads. Though the Long County boys and girls played well, they were outmatched by Darien's top 20 ranked teams. The Blue Tide lost 70-56, and the Lady Tide lost 56-31.

Local councilman bowls perfect game

Allenhurst City Councilman James Willis is somewhat quiet when it comes to his recent accomplishment. Willis bowled a perfect 300 and a three-game series of 801 on Feb. 1, during the Friday night league's team competitions at Marne Lanes.

The Blue Tide began their program in June and have been practicing three days a week ever since, with the exception of taking off last week. They will wrap up their conditioning July 17, and their football camp will run July 21-25. School practice begins July 28.

Swimming is more than treading water

Tom Dunlap started swimming at age 10 and still asserts - 70 years later - that the sport is good for the body and mind. His friend, Gary Burch, started swimming about two years ago and said it has improved his overall health. Both men regularly take to the pool at the Liberty County YMCA, and while they do it to stay in shape and have fun, they want others to know that the recreational activity can be deadly for those who don't know how to swim. "Most of the kids who drown probably thought they could swim," Dunlap said.
