Liberty County High School hosted four local track teams Thursday afternoon for their third home meet, where the Lady Panthers earned 169 points for a first-place win after 15 events.

Effingham takes down BI

Not even a temporary power outage, which postponed Friday night's baseball game for 15 minutes, could help the Bradwell Tigers in their Region 3-AAAAA contest against Effingham County. The Tigers fell, 10-0, to the hard-hitting Rebels, who opened the game with a solo home run in the first inning.

Former Long County High School basketball and football player Ricardo Rivera is playing basketball at Voorhees College, where the men's team just won the 2012-13 Association of Independent Institutions Division I college basketball title.

First Presbyterian Christian Academy recently nabbed two more shutouts. The Lady Highlanders defeated Georgia Christian, 7-0, and the Highlanders downed Georgia Christian, 8-0, in soccer Thursday afternoon.

Hinesville Hurricanes participate in Read Across America event

Members of the Hinesville Hurricanes recently traveled to Long County to participate in Smiley Elementary School's Read Across America program. The players read to several of the classes, including Drew Toney's class, and several players signed a football and presented it to the school's media center. Blue Tide finishing summer conditioning

The Long County High School football team's summer conditioning program is winding down. The Blue Tide began their program in June and have been practicing three days a week ever since, with the exception of taking off last week. They will wrap up their conditioning July 17, and their football camp will run July 21-25. School practice begins July 28.

The Bradwell Institute Tigers resumed team practices this week after taking one week off as required by the Georgia High School Association. The players trained with their helmets on, allowing them to become acclimated to the heat.

Swimming is more than treading water

Tom Dunlap started swimming at age 10 and still asserts - 70 years later - that the sport is good for the body and mind. His friend, Gary Burch, started swimming about two years ago and said it has improved his overall health. Both men regularly take to the pool at the Liberty County YMCA, and while they do it to stay in shape and have fun, they want others to know that the recreational activity can be deadly for those who don't know how to swim. "Most of the kids who drown probably thought they could swim," Dunlap said.
