Wins pile up as the year ends

Several local boys' basketball teams have been heating up the scoreboards as 2011 draws to a close. Faith Baptist Christian Academy has won four of its last five games, Liberty County High School remains undefeated and Bradwell Institute and First Presbyterian Christian Academy notched wins in tournament play.

Miami’s Brown getting hot

Former Liberty County High School basketball player Rion Brown seems to be returning to form. According to Sun Sentinel reporter Steve Gorten, Brown, a 6-foot-6 sophomore guard, was in a shooting slump for the past three weeks but put those troubles behind him with added time in the gym and a standout performance against Florida Atlantic University on Dec. 17.

BI Lady Tigers return from Macon

Just before the holiday, Bradwell's Lady Tiger basketball team returned from the 2011 Great Southern Shootout in Macon, where the girls finished 1-2 in games played Dec. 17, Dec. 21 and Dec. 22, respectively. The BI and Liberty boys are in Statesboro, where they both won tournament openers Monday night. The BI boys defeated Mundy Mills High, 85-81, and the Panthers still are undefeated at 9-0 after beating Glenn Hills, 57-55.

Seven Highlanders named to All-Region team

Long County High School recently honored its football players at a fall sports banquet. Taking home the Outstanding Defensive Lineman Award was Nick Stock. The Outstanding Defensive Back Award went to Brandon Adkins. Delonte Singleton won the JV Coaches Award, the Coaches Offensive Ironman Award went to Jacob Turner, the Freshman Student-Athlete Award winner was D'Andre Watkins, and Tyler Smith was recognized on the 2-AA All-Region team as an offensive lineman. Blue Tide baseball team holds rec night for players, coaches

Around 50 players and coaches who are participating in the T-ball, softball and baseball programs came out for the night. Q: John and Chris were playing the fourth hole in their Saturday men's event. John hit his ball from the fairway and was almost sure that he went out of bounds. He announced to Chris that he was hitting a provisional ball. Before hitting his provisional, John replaced his divot and dropped a new ball as near as possible to the spot where he hit his last shot. Did John proceed in accordance with the rules?
