2011 in the rearview mirror

As we prepare to bid adieu to 2011, we'll take a look back at some of the more memorable sports moments of year, starting with the Bradwell Tigers' baseball team. In 2011, the Tigers had what coach Rhett Hellgren called their best season ever, finishing 16-4 overall and 14-4 in Region 3-AAAAA. The boys made it to the first round of the state playoffs. The coach said the best experience he had was the 12-2 win in six innings against Jenkins High.

Tide even region record with win

The Long County High School boys' basketball team won its first Region 2-AA game of the season Saturday with a 67-56 victory over Appling County in Baxley.

Lady Tigers crush Lady Warriors, 69-43

The Bradwell Institute Tigers hosted the Jenkins Warriors on Friday night in a Region 3-AAAAA contest. The Bradwell squads swept Jenkins, with the girls' team earning a decisive 69-43 win and the boys' team edging out a 56-53 victory.

BI lands five on 3-AAAAA team

Five Bradwell Institute softball players were named to the All Region 3-AAAAA team. Lady Tiger Barbara Rego was named to the all-region first team. Rego played as a pitcher, catcher and shortstop during her senior year. Tigers lose lead, game to Johnson High

For nearly 30 minutes Friday night, Bradwell Institute controlled the game, the pace and held the lead against unbeaten Johnson. But the visiting Atomsmashers outscored the Tigers' 18-8 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 55-50 win and stay unbeaten in Region 3-AAAAA.

Testing the condition of a bunker

Q: Alice and Martha are playing No. 5 on their home course. Martha's ball comes to rest short of the green. There is a small, shallow bunker between her ball and the green. Martha wants to putt her ball through the bunker. She believes this is the best shot since the bunker is shallow and the hole is near the bunker. Martha knows that the superintendent recently put new sand in all of the bunkers, so she decides to test the condition of the sand before hitting. Can she do this?
