Walker Middle School bounces back

The Walker Middle School Wildcats football team split a pair of games Wednesday in a tournament in Waycross. In their first game, the Wildcats lost to Waycross, 16-0, but in their second game, they defeated Brantley County, 8-6. Go to www.coastalcourier.com to see photos from the game.

Thunder make noise in Statesboro tournament

The 2012 AAU season just got started, and already the 15U Liberty Thunder team proved they will be hard to beat. The team finished second in a tournament in Statesboro on Aug. 12-13. Coach Patrick Sammons said it was an accomplishment, considering his 15U team played up a division against 16U teams. The Thunder went 3-1, losing the championship to the Wayne County Rampage. "The boys played well all weekend with great defense and timely hitting," Sammons said.

Panthers beat crosstown rival

Cars lined Highway 84 as fans scrambled for the best seat in the house at Friday night's scrimmage between the Liberty County Panthers and the Bradwell Tigers. The only thing louder than the game announcer was the roar of the crowd as the teams exchanged touchdowns before Liberty took the lead midway through the fourth quarter. Despite a last minute surge by the Tigers' offense, the Panthers went on to win, 14-7.

Blue Tide lose scrimmage to Red Raiders

The Long County High School football team lost a scrimmage to Bacon County on Thursday in Ludowici. Playing in front of the hometown fans, the Blue Tide lost, 41-14, to the Red Raiders.
