The local community nominated people in need and the recipients were chosen by a committee. Members of the United SteelWorkers Union Local 1086 at Interstate Paper LLC in Riceboro are getting into the holiday spirit. They donated five Thanksgiving baskets to needy families in Liberty County. Local Union President Chris Stacy said the group wanted to give back to area communities by helping families during the holidays. "It was not a hand out but a token of appreciation," he said. "We look forward to more charitable acts from Local 1086."
Lamar Tillman of Hinesville received the State Layman of the Year Award for 2010 at a recent convention of the General Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta. Tillman is the president of his district, which includes 13 counties. He received the award in November from the General Missionary Baptist Laymen's Ministry.
