Appalachian Trail celebrates 75th anniversary

Harpers Ferry, WV – This year marks the 75th anniversary of the completion of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.), the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, measuring roughly 2,180 miles in length from Georgia to Maine. The anniversary will occur on Tuesday, August 14, 2012.

Ft. McAllister to host Jr. Ranger camp

Fort McAllister State Historic Park in Richmond Hill will have its Junior Ranger Summer Camp June 25-29 and July 9-13 for children ages 8-12. The camp will run from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. daily. The camp costs $75 per child. There is a limit of 30 campers for each week.

Disney to banish junk-food ads from kid shows

NEW YORK (AP) - Disney says its programming will no longer be sponsored by junk food. The Walt Disney Co. said Tuesday that it will become the first major media company to ban such ads for its TV channels, radio stations and websites intended for children. That means kids watching Saturday morning children's shows on Disney's ABC network will no longer see ads for fast foods and sugary cereals that don't meet company's nutrition standards. ...

NEW YORK (AP) - Teaching kids to become "bullyproof" is all the rage. Books, videos and websites promise to show parents how to protect their kids from being bullied; school districts are buying curricula with names like "Bully-Proofing Your School," a well-regarded program used in thousands of classrooms. Even martial arts programs are getting into the act: "Bullyproofing the world, one child at a time," is the motto for a jujitsu program called Gracie Bullyproof.
