MANSFIELD - For hunting enthusiasts who have dreamed of going beyond the rifle-shooting basics but weren't sure where to start, the Family Day at the Range series provides an opportunity. Shad season starts Wednesday morning

WAYCROSS - Commercial fishermen can take to the water at 6 a.m. Jan. 1, which is the opening day of the state's shad season, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division. Shad season runs through midnight Monday, March 31.

Great competitors make a sport better

Mile 12 of a tough half-marathon. My hamstring is tight, ready to snap like an overstretched rubber band. My lungs are full of fire. My head is pounding harder than my feet. I will run nowhere near as fast as I usually run. No PR’s on this day, yet I feel prouder and more accomplished than ever.
