Bad weather no longer anobstacle

Hello folks, Tight Line Jr. here. Well, if you were fishing for rain, it looks like your wish came true. But it looks like we have some good fishing weather for the weekend. Here are a few reports from around the coastal area.

DNR begins tripletail fish study

BRUNSWICK - The tripletail, a fish popular with anglers but a mystery to scientists, will be the focus of a new study sponsored by Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration. Over the next two years, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in partnership with the University of Georgia, hopes to learn more about this odd fish by studying the one-of-a-kind congregation of tripletail found in the waters around Jekyll Island.

'Orphaned' wildlife do not need to be rescued

SOCIAL CIRCLE - Concern for 'orphaned' wildlife is simply human nature. Most people who come across a deer fawn, a young bird or a newborn rabbit will initially watch in amazement and then immediately wonder if the animal is in need of help. Yet, as newborn wildlife blossom into existence this spring, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division encourages residents to resist the urge to 'rescue' these animals.

Ogeechee-Canoochee family paddle April 11

STATESBORO - The Ogeechee-Canoochee annual Canoochee River Race has been replaced by a Family Paddle. Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper has scheduled the Family Paddle for Saturday, April 11 (rain/flood date April 25).

Woodpeckers caught on Fort Stewart

Biologists from the Fish and Wildlife Branch at Fort Stewart and from the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division recently captured two female and one male red-cockaded woodpeckers at the massive Army base. The juvenile woodpeckers were taken to Moody Forest Natural Area 30 miles away and released early the next morning.

Keep bird feeders clean to avoid salmonella

FORSYTH - Reports of more Georgians finding dead songbirds at feeders and tests pointing to salmonella as the major culprit have Georgia Wildlife Resources Division biologists urging care and diligence in feeder upkeep.

Hummingbirds return to Georgia

FORSYTH - If you haven't already done so, hang up your feeders. Ruby-throated hummingbirds and other avian migrants are returning to Georgia from wintering grounds far to the south. Ruby-throated "hummers" may travel more than 1,200 miles from Central America to Georgia.

WILD facts: Peepers pipe

After a cool rain, listen for the high-pitched mating calls of the spring peeper. A distant chorus of these tiny frogs sounds like bells jingling. In the South, this amphibian "peeps" from November through late winter. However, in northern states the calling and breeding starts when the first warm rain arrives, signaling that spring is near.

Family paddle on Canoochee

Proposed coal plant threatens local waters
