WILD facts: Peepers pipe

After a cool rain, listen for the high-pitched mating calls of the spring peeper. A distant chorus of these tiny frogs sounds like bells jingling. In the South, this amphibian "peeps" from November through late winter. However, in northern states the calling and breeding starts when the first warm rain arrives, signaling that spring is near.

Calling all gobblers: Turkey season starts March 21

SOCIAL CIRCLE - Turkey hunters across the state are dusting off their calls in preparation for the upcoming turkey season. Opening day is Saturday March 21, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division anticipates another enjoyable season.

Family paddle on Canoochee

STATESBORO - The Ogeechee-Canoochee annual Canoochee River Race has been replaced by a Family Paddle. Ogeechee-Canoochee Riverkeeper has scheduled the Family Paddle for Saturday, April 11 (rain/flood date April 25). Paddlers from all over the Southeast will spend the day paddling down the beautiful Canoochee River.

WILD facts: Help wildlife

Georgians can support nongame wildlife conservation, education and recreation projects by purchasing a wildlife license plate for their vehicles. A one-time $25 tag fee applies in addition to annual registration and ad-valorem fees. The bald eagle and hummingbird license plates are a primary funding source for the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division's Nongame Conservation Section.
