More eagles nesting in Georgia

FORSYTH - Chalk up another solid nesting year for bald eagles in Georgia. Department of Natural Resources aerial surveys in January and March documented 142 occupied nesting territories, 111 successful nests and 175 young fledged. Totals for eaglets and successful nests declined slightly compared to 2010, when the respective counts were 194 and 122. But the number of occupied nests increased from 139 last year. Local NAACP branch elects new president

Dwight Newbould, 43, recently was elected president of the Liberty County Branch of the NAACP for the 2011-12 term. He was born in Miami, Fla., raised in Maryland and has been a resident of Liberty County for 12 years. Newbould works as the re-entry affairs coordinator for the Federal Correctional Institution in Estill, S.C. He is a husband and a father.

On-post standoff ends peacefully

Installation police arrested a Fort Stewart soldier Saturday following a 22-minute standoff that began as a domestic dispute in post housing. The incident ended peacefully with no injuries, according to a public affairs news release.

New shelter, priority is still client safety

Twenty-three years ago Tri-County Protective Agency Executive Director Paula Foerstel manned a domestic abuse crisis line. Part of her job was to temporarily house victims of domestic violence in area motel rooms, Foerstel recalled. Then, two local families each donated a house for use as a permanent shelter, she said. The 92nd Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart donated labor by connecting the two buildings, she said.
