Editor, The other day I was watching the new buses go by and I realized that what everyone has been saying is true - no one is riding the buses.
Editor, After eight weeks of trying to get a DVD of the Sept. 14 Ludowici City Council meeting - the first to be recorded in Ludowici City Hall - I was finally told that it would be available to me. Up until this point, city hall had referred my request to the city attorney's office and I was told they didn't have to create a disc for me.
Editor, This letter is for all those U.S. senators, congressmen and people in the White House who want to do away with Social Security and Medicare. When the U.S. government shuts down these two programs, it will hurt the elderly and the economy. It will put more people in the unemployment lines because Social Security is the only income many people ages 65 and older have, and older people will have to find employment to ...
Editor, I drove my tractor to the store for a tank of gas and was incarcerated. My tractor is a Yamaha ATV. I was driving the speed limit, signaling turns and my brake lights work. I was wearing eye protection and obeying all applicable laws as I drove the quarter mile from the Friendly Express to Hardeman and I left the pavement at the airport. It is a short piece of tar and close to home - about a mile from my house.
Editor, Our nation is facing the most challenging economic situation since The Great Depression. Unemployment remains high and businesses are going bankrupt. Our government, including Congress, needs to focus on the economy and supporting businesses and individuals to create jobs.
Editor, There have been many comments concerning law enforcement experience being the most important factor to consider when electing a sheriff. We all know that would be beneficial but is not always necessary to effectively perform the duties of sheriff.
Editor, I recently sat in the lobby of Ludowici City Hall and read through the Ludowici Ordinance Book. I had copied the ordinance on elections and the procedures about how government should operate:
Editor, It's that time of year when families gather together to give thanks. This was my late father's favorite time of year. It was a yearly tradition that my father would submit to the local paper a list of things for which he was thankful. As his daughter and in his honor and memory, I would like to carry on that tradition. I hope it touches the lives of those who didn't know him and brings a smile to the faces of those who did.
Editor: I recently read an article about an award winning catch of a tiger shark during the course of a month-long shark fishing contest in Destin, Fla. The picture taken alongside the bloody carcass of what was once a magnificent animal included a couple of children and the local beauty queen.
Editor, With the upcoming runoff election for Liberty County sheriff, I feel the need to bring to light some disturbing questions.
Editor, I guess I'm happy to see the mileage rate will not be raised to support the city of Hinesville's budget. But, dipping into the reserve fund is not the answer either. Can't we produce a balanced budget? It is not an impossible task. I strongly recommend that the council and department heads trim expenses into available funds. We live in a hurricane zone, our country is fighting two wars, we are deep in a ...
Editor, There's a whole bunch of controversy going on in Hinesville with the budget, taxes, talk of raising taxes, expressed outrage by the council members, expressed outrage at the council members, and a whole bunch of good ole democracy happening. Citizens can go on the city of Hinesville website and look at the old and the new proposed budgets and see exactly where their hard earned dollars are going.
Editor, I couldn't help but notice that one of the candidates for the sheriff's office runoff has draped another banner across his signs, which reads "Democratic runoff on Nov. 30," implying that this runoff is only for Democrats.
Editor, This letter is to the citizens of Liberty County: My name is J.J. Jones and I am a former resident of Liberty County. Most of you may remember me as a former deputy sheriff and an Olympic boxer who lost to Evander Holyfield. I am asking all Liberty County residents to vote for Steve Sikes for sheriff. There is not a better person for the job. It is both and honor and a privilege ...
Editor, On Thursday, our great nation honored all of our veterans with parades and ceremonies around the country. I hope everyone thanked them for their service to our country.
