A field of dreams

It appears the new engineered soil and sod field for Liberty County High School's Donell Woods Stadium is right on track. The project was to be completed in mid July. With the recent rains the job was set back temporarily but the new sod is down with four weeks to set before the Panthers' home opener on Aug. 28 against McIntosh Academy. Attempts to get comments from school officials Tuesday were unsuccessful.

Being involved in cheerleading for 40 years, Linda Purnell said it's time the boys and girls of Liberty County get their opportunity to compete in the sport that has taught her some important life lessons.

Knee injury another setback for McGowan

The 2009 year hasn't been kind to Long County native and Toronto pitcher Dustin McGowan. On Thursday, Blue Jays' General Manager J.P. Ricciardi said the right-hander had undergone surgery on his left knee July 9 to repair cartilage. According to Ricciardi, McGowan injured his knee during routine running drills.

Football season approaching

While Aug. 6 signals the start of the new school year, diehard football fans probably have Aug. 1 marked on their calendars. The day marks the official start of football practice as allowed in the bylaws of the Georgia High School Association. It marks the start of two-a-day practices, football helmets, shoulder pads, tackling drills, offensive drills and defensive strategies.

Kids splash away last days of summer

With school starting in two weeks, children and adults alike are trying to get in a few last splashes of summer fun at Stafford Park pool.
