What place have you given God?

As Jesus was concluding what has become known as the "Sermon on the Mount," he said, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof" (Matt. 6:33, 34).

Area ushers are a committed crowd

Ushers often are taken for granted as the church's doorkeepers. But they play a vital role in the ministry. It takes a special, skilled person to serve as an usher.

Baptismal pool to be a park

It was known as the "Round Hole," a pooling spot where muddy waters cooled the skin and stained the white robes of slaves who were baptized there more than 200 hundred years ago.

God cares for man

With the natural disasters that happen in the world, some want to say God does not care for mankind. This is far from the truth. The natural disasters that happen are just that – things of nature. They have happened down through the ages. To those who are involved in the disasters, our prayers go up to God that they soon will be able to go about their normal lives.

Place your full trust in the Lord

Do you have a favorite verse of Scripture? My favorite verse in the entire Bible is 1 John 5:13. "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."

Faith will keep us marching forward

The Israelites were instructed to march once around Jericho for six days and seven times around on the seventh day. Then they were to shout and the city walls would fall. Some of the Israelites probably were questioning God in their minds and, at the same time, becoming tired and weary. I can't help but think that some may have been a little excited about what the outcome would be. Either way, they obeyed God and shouted out in faith and experienced God's miraculous intervention as they conquered Jericho. The walls fell as God had promised (Joshua 6 ...

New gender-neutral Bible draws critics

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In the old translation of the world's most popular Bible, John the Evangelist declares: "If anyone says, 'I love God,' yet hates his brother, he is a liar." Make that "brother or sister" in a new translation that includes more gender-neutral language and is drawing criticism from some conservatives who argue the changes can alter the theological message.

Be content, thankful for what you have

In the book of 1 Timothy, we are told that if we have food and clothes, we need to be content. This idea is far from "the American dream," in which we strive to have all our wants as well as our needs met. For most of us to be satisfied we even dictate what kind of food we eat and what brand of clothes we wear.

Spiritual growth is in His hands

It is not yet officially spring, but we can see the signs. Flowers and trees are budding. Grass is greening up. And some of us have started to plant a few things in the garden. I have planted broccoli, onions, cabbage and potatoes. To date, everything looks good, except I have yet to see any evidence of potatoes.

Seek memories to bring God closer

Memories are an important part of life. Most people can remember their first ride on a bicycle, their first job or how it felt to drive for the first time with a license. There are memories of those who have passed away, stories they told, things they did.
