Heaven's value never decreases

The other day I was talking to someone about what I paid for my house about 10 years ago, what it was worth a couple of years ago and what it is worth today. The value went up and then came crumbling down again. We have not been hit with devaluation of property nearly as bad as most communities in our country.

The Lord won't lead you astray

On Sunday evenings in our church, I have been preaching a series entitled, "Ten Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe: Modern Christian Urban Myths." I got the idea from a book by the same title written by a pastor named Larry Osborne. It really has been a fun study, both for the church and for me.

God's joy is our strength

One of my favorite scriptures is Romans 8:28, which says, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

Some beauty is well worth the wait

There are not too many things more beautiful than the colors of spring – anything from flowering trees to flowering bushes to flowering plants. My favorite is the azaleas, which are about in full bloom.

What place have you given God?

As Jesus was concluding what has become known as the "Sermon on the Mount," he said, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof" (Matt. 6:33, 34).

Area ushers are a committed crowd

Ushers often are taken for granted as the church's doorkeepers. But they play a vital role in the ministry. It takes a special, skilled person to serve as an usher.

Baptismal pool to be a park

It was known as the "Round Hole," a pooling spot where muddy waters cooled the skin and stained the white robes of slaves who were baptized there more than 200 hundred years ago.

God cares for man

With the natural disasters that happen in the world, some want to say God does not care for mankind. This is far from the truth. The natural disasters that happen are just that – things of nature. They have happened down through the ages. To those who are involved in the disasters, our prayers go up to God that they soon will be able to go about their normal lives.

Do religions try to keep their scriptures inaccessible?

The late Christopher Hitchens once ranked, with Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett, among the “four horsemen” of the New Atheism. His most comprehensive attack on religious faith came in a best-seller called — and don’t miss the title’s lowercased first word — “god is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything” (Twelve, 2009).
