Dr. Douglas Holden is certainly no novice to the ministry. He has served in the ministry and as a pastor for more than 50 years. Currently, he is serving as the interim pastor at Allenhurst Presbyterian Church.
The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ was founded in 1919 in Columbus, Ohio, by the late Bishop R.C. Lawson. His teachings still hold true today. He penned the following:
The Hebrew writer spoke of heaven as entering into a rest. "Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest … There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own ...
A group in our church recently finished a course on money management. We watched video clips of Dave Ramsey, read his book, and completed homework assignments each week.
Members of the Alliance of Administrators are busy preparing for their annual conference on April 23-24.
The other morning as I was driving through Richmond Hill, I noticed a pleasant sight to my left; it was what I can refer to as not Savannah's famous "waving girl" but Richmond Hill's own "waving man."
Trinity Missionary Baptist Temple will have an installation service for Dr. Lucile W. Smiley as pastor at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The word of God is a one of the great blessings mankind has been given. God explains to man how he came to be, how to live, and how to prepare for eternity. In the pages of holy writ we are told of just how "wonderful" heaven will be.
This past week people all around the world celebrated the holiday or Holy Day of Easter. For some it is just time off work or an opportunity to be with the family but for Christians it is a time to commemorate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is to this last group that I wish to address this writing.
Spring is alive all around us. The beauty is evident in the blooming trees and azaleas. It is a wonderful time to live in south Georgia! Unless, of course, you have allergies. Mine stay under control most of the time, thanks to the miracles of modern medicine. But I know what it is like to be so clogged by the pollen that I can't smell a thing. And when you can't smell anything, you can't taste anything. And quite frankly it's hard to enjoy all of the beauty when you feel miserable.
God has put His personal touch in every part of His creation. All creation exhibits His handiwork. Man is the most beautiful and precious of God's creations. God gave man a soul, awareness, reasoning and abilities. He also gave man his own will.
It's a new year and the Singing Shepherds are ready for another exciting, soul-stirring concert.
On many occasions we buy something that requires assembly. Inside the box is a booklet telling the name of all the parts and how they fit together. In most cases this booklet is placed aside because we know how to put things together. After several minutes of things not fitting together and having parts left that we are pretty sure should have been used, we reach for the booklet, read and then follow the instructions. To our surprise all the pieces were gone and the item looked just like its picture on the box.
Easter weekend is upon us and for some this is just a secular holiday; time to have fun, be off work, and be with the family.
Tomorrow, in churches all around the world, Christians will celebrate the most important day of the year. We will celebrate Easter. We will celebrate Resurrection Sunday! We will sing songs, and read Scripture, and pray, and give honor to the One who was raised from the dead some 2000 years ago.
Local judges and their staffs in Alabama weren't the only ones dealing with questions about marriage this week after the Supreme Court refused to enjoin the practice pending a ruling. Some clergy rushed to perform same-sex weddings, while others protested the granting of civil licenses for same-sex couples to wed.
In the beginning, religious leaders put little energy into biblical teachings about the environment. It was enough to know that God created an earth rich in resources and formed humans in his image to enjoy it.
The doctors called it “failure to thrive.”
Is the word "propitiate" a part of your vocabulary?
Kids are pretty honest and upfront about their feelings. So who better to ask about the meaning of Valentine's Day?
We all have times in our lives when things don't go according to plan. We lose jobs, illness befalls us or family tragedies strike. But how many of us have dealt with a train wreck on live TV?
"American Sniper," starring Bradley Cooper as a patriotic sniper serving in the Iraq War, is not “just a movie." It serves as a chilling reminder of the realities of war — a war that remains an afterthought for many Americans who weren't directly involved in the action — and the hurtful feelings many Americans still hold towards Islam.
In the national debate over immunizing children, much has been said about "religious objections" to vaccines claimed by parents. Finding a religion whose tenets object to the practice, however, is difficult.
