Discipline, not help, is often what's needed

Q: My 5-year-old is the youngest of my three children. Her older siblings, boy/girl twins, clearly outshine her athletically. They're already very skilled at wakeboarding and snow skiing, for example. I think my youngest has decided that because she doesn't measure up to her siblings, she will simply give up. All she wants to do is hang out with me. (I'm not athletic either, but everyone in the family except this one child is physically active.) Furthermore, she is disrespectful to anyone who tries to interest her in trying something new. She ignores the person, acting ...

Keep chili on hand for chilly days

The recent chilly weather has given me a perfect excuse to break out all my soup, stew and chili recipes. For the record, I am a soup fanatic. I can eat soup with every meal all year round - I love it that much. However, my husband and children don't always feel the same way, and I believe that they'd like winter to end as soon as possible.

Marne Health site promotes education

It's not uncommon to turn to the internet when seeking health and wellness information. However, the World Wide Web is a huge place, where anyone with computer access can post anything they want. It's difficult to know whether information found online is accurate or even safe. This is an issue the team at the 3rd Infantry Division's Health Promotion Office has been working on for more than a year now with the development and launch of their new website, MarneHealth.com.

Parents, keep an eye on electronics

Q: Our 13-year-old son has had an iPod for the past 3 years. We've always made use of the parental restrictions to make sure that he could only access "clean" music, movies and websites. When I recently checked the device, however, I discovered that he's been listening to the most awful and explicit rap music, some of which I would describe as pornographic. Apparently, he's been able to hide this from us for about a year. We have taken away his iPod forever, grounded him until further notice, suspended his video-game privileges and banned violent video games ...
