Troops get raise

WASHINGTON -- Military members received a 3 percent pay raise effective Tuesday, as President Bush urges Congress to revise some provisions regarding Iraq contained in the fiscal 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.

The president authorized the 3 percent pay raise in an executive order. The act includes authorization for a 0.5 percent additional pay raise for U.S. troops, but the president has, for now, elected not to sign the defense authorization bill in its present form while Congress is adjourned, a practice known as a "pocket veto."

Bill will modernize VA hospital

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation today by U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) to modernize the inpatient wards at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Atlanta. The legislation authorizes $20.5 million to complete the upgrades.

Traffic patterns changed on Fort Stewart

FORT STEWART - A road will be closed in the National Guard Training Center and the speed limit on two Georgia highways reduced to 45 mph through March 15 because of the mobilization of the 76th Brigade Combat Team, an Indiana Army National Guard unit.

4th IBCT dedicates its fitness center

It took 57 years for Pfc. Charles Johnson to be recognized for his heroism on Outpost Harry during the Korean War. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star in 2010 for his actions on June 12, 1953. On Tuesday, Johnson was again honored during a special ceremony on Fort Stewart that was attended by his sister and two survivors of Outpost Harry.
